For the first video in our Inspiring the Next Generation series we spoke with Tam Weir to find out what he thinks it takes to be a professional decorator.

With a wealth of experience under his belt, Tam Weir has worked on a number of different projects over the years including private and commercial properties, residential homes, housing estates and large boats. Having started his career at 16 after taking a course in college to learn about different construction trades, Tam found he had a knack for decorating. Developing his craft over the last 10 years, Tam believes that to become a skilled professional decorator, tradespeople need patience, resilience, an eye for detail, and most importantly, a love for the job.

Tam also says it is vital that professionals know their tools. Having a good understanding of what each tool can help to achieve will ultimately improve on-site efficiency and productivity – and ensure that the best results are achieved every time.

Finally, Tam is a strong believer in always striving to improve and build on your skillset. Throughout his career Tam has turned his hand to a whole host of jobs – some more unique than others – and has shown that painting and decorating is a very diverse career choice and offers numerous opportunities to those considering joining the trade.
